“I don’t need to be a professional baker to bake badass blueberry buttermilk biscuits.”

IT’S LOOKIN’ LIKE SUM’N!

Back in the 90’s, I had an Easy Bake Oven. A very popular, short-lived toy that had me feeling very independent (with the help of my sisters) until the baking mixes ran out, three uses later…

I’ve never felt so cheated in my life!

That is until I tried my first Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe a few years later. They tasted like sawdust. I blamed it on the fact we didn’t have a Martha Stewart-esque kitchen growing up. Surely, with the double-door oven, they would have turned out soft, delicious, and gooey.

I was afraid to expand.

None of the recipes ever turned out quite how they should. They didn’t taste anything like the prepackaged goodies, and they sure as hell looked NOTHING like the photos in the cookbooks. I had spent years thinking I could never measure up to the masterpieces of Nestle and Pillsbury.

Betty Crocker never quite made the cut.

I was never impressed with that brand for some reason. There had to be more to the life of sweets than just a boxed baking mix. Then it hit me. I could potentially make a recipe that tastes BETTER than Betty!  So you mean to tell me that all this time, I could experiment and change things in recipes to fit my taste profile? With the new and exciting answers to my question, I decided to give life in the kitchen another go.

I still don’t have a Martha Stewart kitchen.

I decided I do not need to be a professional baker to bake badass buttermilk blueberry biscuits (this is not something I’ve done yet but I liked the alliteration). I had to understand that it is quite the process. I still have ups and downs in my culinary expeditions. It doesn’t always turn out right, a lot of times it does, and sometimes there is no “it”. I get to make my own rules.

That’s what makes it exciting. I never quite know how it’s going to taste or what it’s going to look like. The point is, I’ve created something from nothing.
